Biodiversity - the land, waters and all living things - form Indigenous creation and dreamtime stories and songlines about how they and the world around them came to be. It contributes to the emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals and communities it is the life-blood that sustains rural and coastal communities and it is fundamental to Indigenous people. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY BIODIVERSITY AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?īiodiversity, or biological diversity, is a term used to describe the variety of living things in the natural environment: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms the genes they contain and the ecosystems in which they occur.īiodiversity is valued by people for many reasons. This article highlights the unique characteristics of Australia’s biodiversity and explains the importance of Australia’s biodiverse environment to individuals, society and the economy.
